How do I know what size cello I need?
As with violins and violas you need the right sized cello for your age, shape and height. Cellos are measured by the length of the back, from the full-sized cello of 30 inches or more intended for adults more than five feet tall, to 1/8 cellos designed for children between four and six years old.

What are the different sizes of cellos?
Cellos come in two adult sizes, the 4/4 standard (48” tall) and 7/8 size, as well as five junior sizes: the 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/10 and 1/16 sizes. 17th-Century cellos were substantially bigger than today’s average cello. A cellist’s 24” arm length is good for a full 4/4 size cello.

It is more than possible to teach oneself to play an instrument and even take that skill to a professional level. However, I don’t believe that certain instruments – particularly the violin, the viola or the cello – lend themselves at all well to self instruction.
Should I rent or buy a cello?
First-timers should rent first, buy later
For this reason, and because even the most basic, decent quality cello will cost around $1000, we recommend renting first and then buying once you know you’re a bona fide cellist for life (or at least for the next several years).
How much should I spend on a cello?
Wood and workmanship are the primary components in the pricing of a cello, overall. The older, more aged the wood, and higher quality (straighter, even grain on spruce, well-flamed on maple) determines it’s cost in raw materials. A truly fine set of tonewood for cello is over $1000, just for the wood!
Is it hard to learn the cello?
Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way.
